No matter how you’re getting there (plane, road trip, etc.), we love head-to-toe black. It’s elegant, slimming and especially road resilient. Start with a few basic, comfortable pieces (chances are you already have some favorites in your closet), and add a coordinating scarf that can double as a blanket. Then add more black. Your travel day just got chic and easy! (Check out Asos for a ton of other great ‘blanket scarves’.)
If your winter escape includes cozying up in a winter cabin, think casual, comfortable, warm layers. You can create up to 7 outfits with our separates above, and fit it all in a carry-on. Just add socks, underwear and pajamas and you’re good to go – you have a weekend’s worth of cute outfits that work when you’re spending an evening at the local craft beer bar, or hunkering down fireside!
You know you want one. There are two kinds – one is the ultimate seasonal sweater that’s made a comeback from the 80’s and is the star of the very popular ‘Ugly Christmas Sweater’ party. The other is the more subdued version that is currently on-trend, cool and chic. We’ve compiled a selection of both, so you’re sure to find a festive sweater for both your ‘Ugly Christmas Sweater’ party, and any ultra festive mood that strikes! This one, this one and this one also make particularly great gifts for an office or white elephant party that calls for a humorous gift at an under $25 price point. If you’re looking for more over-the-top Christmas gear, check out Tipsy Elves. They have a ton of fun items including sweaters, leggings, jumpsuits and accessories, and a great selection for men and kids too!
There’s nothing like cutting down your own Christmas tree to infuse your weekend with holiday spirit (and by that we mean there’s nothing like strolling through a field of Christmas trees, picking the perfect one, and watching your husband/boyfriend saw it down and tie it to the top of the car). You need boots, cute, comfortable layers and Starbucks, and he’ll need gloves, twine, a tarp and a chainsaw. Where to go to forage in a Christmas tree forest?
- Where and How to Cut Your Own Christmas Tree in the Boston Area.
- Where to Cut Down Your Own Christmas Tree in New Jersey.
- North Carolina Christmas Trees.
- Portland, Oregon area Christmas Tree Farms.
- Joe’s Trees in Virginia.
Unless you’re an online shopping wizard (Outfituation’s ‘Gift Lists’ debuting soon!), it’s inevitable that you’ll be venturing out into actual stores for some grocery and gift shopping. Instead of overheating in a sweater (hello stuffy stores, warm crowds and long lines), we love to layer a shirt and jacket to allow for varying temperatures. This one is from Madewell – they have a ton of cute shirts for both wearing and gifting (some at 20% off through Nov. 24). This jacket is from C Wonder. If you haven’t checked them out lately, you seriously need to! They’re currently offering 30% off everything. Happy shopping!
Don’t you love a great sweater that you can wear over the holidays and throughout the winter too? We’re obsessed with this sweater from J Crew – perfect for those days when you have an extra bounce in your step and basic just won’t do! And if one sweater isn’t enough to get your celebratory on, we found these lovlies too:
- Gap Holiday Stripe Wool Sweater (get $45 off your purchase of $100+ until 11/20).
- A perfect, fun, weekend sweater from Kate Spade Saturday.
- This is the cutest, coziest, girliest cardigan ever – Unif Hole Cardigan.
If you enjoy taking your training outside, the cold weather shouldn’t hinder you from getting your sweat on. Athleta‘s Tracker Top (#2 above) is available in six colors and features a fabric that reacts to both your body’s temperature and the outdoor environment. Pretty cool. In fact, Athleta has a great new collection of mix-and-match winter workout items to keep you perfectly cute and covered for a variety of cold weather activities. Check them out here!
If you’re like us our workouts vary and include gym time (the treadmill and various classes), hiking and biking, etc. So an effective and comfortable training shoe is uber essential in our quest for workout maximization. We did our homework and found the highest rated training shoes available, making your everyday training shoe choice easy.
#1 and #2 on our list is the Nike Free 5.0 TR Fit 4 Training Shoe. It received 4.5 – 5 stars on every site we found it on. This shoe has been reviewed on Nordstrom.com 457 times (and has a 4.5 star rating). Best of all, it comes in numerous colors and patterns (see Nordstrom or Nike). At Nike you can even customize this shoe (very cool).

Going out of town for the holidays? Your perfect plane outfit is all about comfort and layers. Because temperatures can vary during travel (departure and destination cities, airport and airplane), we love the option of throwing on a cozy sweatshirt for a third layer of warmth, and shedding it when we’re warm. And our outfit always includes a scarf and ballet flats (perfect for slipping in and out of quickly when going through airport security). The plaid shirt we’ve featured is super soft and cute and our absolute favorite, but, since plaid is the print of the season, there are tons of cute plaid shirts out there. The others that top our list are this one from Madewell, this one from Forever 21, this one from the Gap, and this one from Ralph Lauren. Happy travels!
When weathering the storm, the key to outfit perfection is total coverage and waterproofing. You can’t go wrong with great rain boots and a warm, versatile parka. We love this one because it not only repels water, it’s two coats in one! It has a removable quilted wool liner that turns the parka into an anorak shell ~ great for when you need to shed a layer of warmth. Here’s some of our other favorites:
- We especially adore the burgandy color of this water repellent parka from Zara. But if you want a coat that goes with everything, it comes in black too.
- This one is awesome if you’re looking for more of a casual Parka. It’s a ‘hunter green’ color that also has a kind of military green vibe.
- The North Face (the retailer of outdoor gear) has this parka that is waterproof, has a quilted lining and detachable hood, and comes in seven colors. Seriously? Pretty much perfection (just look at the reviews!).
An outfit that’s perfect for trick or treat accompanying (and other fall occasions that call for warm, casual comfort). Take advantage of J Crew’s Fall sale – 25% off full-price styles!
Oh how we love the denim shirt. It goes with everything. It goes anywhere. It can be styled endlessly. And it’s oh, soooooo comfortable. One of our favorites is the one we’ve featured from J Crew, but the denim shirt comes in endless varieties and price points – like this one, this one, and this one. You’ll want one in your closet – oh, and the best part is that it’s seasonless too!

Saturday errands, niece’s soccer game, Starbucks, nail appointment? Pair a fun sweatshirt with jeans or leggings for a completely cute off-duty outfit!

Vegas, baby. Vegas. Need we say more? Have fun girl!
When you’re doing something outside this weekend (the soccer game, Fall festival, etc.), layering is key. That way you can remove or add layers as the weather changes during the day. One of our favorite color combos is navy and black, and we used a scarf to tie the outfit together. We also love this scarf (now 30% off) and this scarf (now 20% off), and this jacket too (now 25% off)! Add a hands-free crossbody and flat boots and you’re ready for fall frolicking.
There’s nothing better than a sweater dress to feel warm and comfy-cozy while at the movies. Add tights when the weather turns extra chilly, and a chic moto jacket for going out after (we love this one and this one too).
We’re changing up our ‘go-to’ jean with a grey pair that adds a denim style twist to our Fall closet! Just like traditional denim, grey jeans are a neutral, and can be worn with almost anything, and styled in endless ways. The perfect denim update and totally on-trend! In addition to these Zara jeans our favorites are these from Joes , and the slim cigarette jean from 7 For All Mankind.
An outfit that works for a tailgate party, the stadium or sports bar! Pair on-trend boyfriend jeans with a casual, striped tee and add team-color accessories and a Maya Brenner state necklace. Perfect for looking both game day chic and showing your team spirit.
We’re loving Athleta‘s new Fall collection of workout wear featuring shades of black, blush and grey. Really, there’s nothing like a little pink to get your girl power on!
Our Fall bootie favs are ones you’ll go-to over and over again – they have a relaxed, casual vibe, and either a flat or slight heel, for the perfect mix of warmth, comfort and style!
Going to Seattle or Portland for a long weekend getaway? We love the ‘wear jeans to anything’ vibe of these cities that allows for sight-seeing in casual, comfortable clothes. The best part is that you can go to almost any of their great restaurants in jeans too! We found the key when traveling here is dressing in layers to allow for the changes in weather that can occur on Fall days.
We LOVE this take on the denim skirt from 7 for All Mankind. Add a white tee and edgy accessories for the perfect casually-cool weekend look!
